Delhi to Kalpa Valley – The Solo Backpacking Trip

I had left from Delhi to Kalpa the day before my birthday. I wanted this birthday special and for me, what better than exploring an unknown region.

Let me ask you something that, what sort of image do you make in your mind when you hear about:

Hey, Let’s go on a Kinnaur Valley Trip? (That Highway movie)

Let me think for you, something like –

Tall mountains with sharp edges and heart-stopping views while driving on the deadliest roads in India.

                                       OR

The mighty Kinnaur Kailash range situated at an elevation of (6,050m).

Is this what you are thinking ??

How much is the Delhi to Kalpa distance?

The Delhi to Kalpa road distance is approx. 600 km.

How to Reach Kalpa from Delhi

The Kalpa can be reached by –

Delhi to Kalpa Flight

The nearest airport is Jubbarhatti located 22kms away from Shimla.

The distance remains 243km which can be covered either by taking the 1st option is: taking a bus from Lakkar Bazar, ISBT, or old bus stand which will drop at Reckong Peo (Headquarters of Kinnaur district).

The 2nd option is: taking a cab which will directly drop you at Kalpa (costly).

  1. Delhi ➡️ Shimla (flight) (347km) ➡️ Reckong Peo (231km) (Bus) ➡️ Kalpa (3km)
    OR
  2. Delhi ➡️ Shimla (flight) (347km) ➡️ Kalpa (Cab) 

Delhi to Kalpa Train

The nearest railway station to reach from Delhi to Kalpa by Train is in Shimla, Shimla railway station.

The distance remains 224km which can be covered either by taking the 1st option is: taking a bus from Lakkar Bazar, ISBT, or the old bus stand to Reckong Peo in Kinnaur (same as after getting down by flight).

  1. Delhi ➡️ Shimla (train) (347km) ➡️ Reckong Peo (231km)(bus) ➡️ Kalpa (3km)
    OR
  2. Delhi ➡️ Shimla (train) (347km) ➡️ Kalpa (Cab)

Delhi to Kalpa Bus

Unfortunately, there is no direct Delhi to Kalpa bus but you can get an ordinary Delhi to Reckong Peo bus.

  1. Delhi ➡️ Shimla {night Bus (347km)} ➡️ Reckong Peo {day Bus (231km)} ➡️ Kalpa in the evening (3km)

Long stretch at one go and then in intervals –

  1. Delhi ➡️ Rampur {night Bus (474km)}➡️ Reckong Peo {day Bus( 99km)} ➡️ Kalpa in the evening ( 3km)

Direct Bus –

  1. Delhi ➡️ Reckong Peo (573km)➡️  Kalpa (3km)

You can also go by taking Delhi to Reckong Peo bus directly. The timing of the bus is 8:10 p.m. from ISBT Kashmiri Gate.

Shimla to Kalpa Bus

There are no direct Shimla to Kalpa bus but you can easily get a bus to Reckong Peo from Shimla.

i.e. Reckong Peo to Kalpa distance is 3km and you will get another bus from outside Reckong Peo bus stand to Kalpa. The fare for the Reckong Peo to Kalpa bus journey would be around Rs.15 – Rs.20 per person.

Shimla to Kalpa Road Conditions 

The drive from Shimla to Rampur Bushahr is very pleasant and the twist in your road trip is around the corner.

Yes, tighten your seat belts the hip hop ride has just arrived. The road is not smooth at least starting 80-100 km before the Reckong Peo. But you will be going to enjoy this road trip.

Note – If you willing to travel by Bus, here are the rates.

Delhi – Shimla (Volvo) = Around Rs.700-Rs.800

Shimla – Reckong Peo (Ordinary HRTC) = Rs.417

Reckong Peo – Kalpa (Ordinary) = Rs.15

Major Note – It’s going to be a long journey, so don’t try to travel on empty stomachs and especially on the bus.

Let me share an example during my Kalpa Valley Trip – I was traveling in public transport and the lady sitting ahead of me started vomiting and continued till the whole journey because she hasn’t eaten anything and that disturbed everyone.

Learnings to take

Don’t ever travel empty stomach especially in mountains where the bumpy journey will going to happen at every turn.

How to Reach Kalpa from Rampur Bushahr

Kalpa from Rampur Bushahr is another 100 km (approx.) It’s also a major hub where connectivity to anywhere can be found easily.

How to Reach Kalpa from Reckong Peo (Kinnaur)

This article focuses on Kalpa Valley, i.e. from Reckong Peo, you can easily reach Kalpa.

  1. Reckong Peo ➡️ Kalpa (3km)

Please Note – You will going to reach Reckong Peo in the evening, so there’s an outside chance that you will get the bus to Kalpa from outside the Peo bus stand. The last bus leaves almost around 6 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. If you miss out, there are taxis and also people are helpful, even a lift/hitchhike will work.

Why Stay in Kalpa only?

Because of two reasons –

1. The convenience of the bus

The bus is available from Kalpa to reach Reckong Peo and is scheduled to leave every 30-40 min. and the last bus to leave for Peo is 5:40 p.m. from Kalpa. (Rs.20)

Where I was staying, hardly any bus passes by. So, I have to come to Kalpa 2-3 km to catch a bus.

2. The Heritage village

Staying in Kalpa Valley is bliss. My majority of the day was spent in Kalpa, and without any doubt, the vibrant energy will hold you tight.

However, it is a small village with a population of 1300 approx. But the days you are going to spend on your Kalpa trip will be one of the best in the Kinnaur regions.

Kalpa is located at a height of 9,711 ft. and the weather remains pleasing throughout the year.

Jan-April

It’s the sheer month of winters with min. temperature 0- 8 degrees and max. temperature 8-20 degrees.

May-Aug

Summers are the month of escape from the heat and Kalpa city is the place to go with min. temperature 13-16 degrees and max. temperature 21-24 degrees.

Sept-Dec

The starting of monsoon and winters bring cold nights with min. temperature 13-1 degrees and max. temperature 21-10 degrees.

Best time to visit Kalpa

Summers are the best season to visit Kalpa. i.e. from May – Aug.

Avoid hilly areas during the monsoon or even pre-monsoon, as safe as possible because landslides, roadblocks, and floods are the normal thing in the Kinnaur district.

The District Headquarter of Kinnaur – Reckong Peo

Headquarters of Kinnaur, Reckong Peo also known as Peo by localities. It comes before Kalpa. One can take a bus from Peo to Kalpa and it charges Rs.15. The panoramic view of Kinner Kailash is visible from Peo and a much beautiful view from Kalpa?

Reckong Peo Bazar is just below the bus stand, from Bazar upper road goes to Kalpa and the straight road goes to Pangi.

Localities believe that after the sunrise Pangi is not a place to be around because of the people’s behavior.

Reckong Peo is the main hub of Kinnaur in terms of Shopping, traveling to other places, and even taking permits (foreigners) to go Spiti.
Considering the narrow roads, there is the parking at the starting of Peo with rates Rs.30 up to 6hrs and Rs.50 above 6hrs.

Kalpa Tourist Spot

Kalpa is a heritage village and after the release of the movie “Highway”, people are in search of those sharp edges of Kinnaur mountains and a walk in the heaven village of Kalpa. Apart from taking a walk in heaven, some of the places to visit in Kalpa valley Trip are –

1. Hu-Ba-Lan-Kar Monastery

Located in the crossroads of Kalpa is Hu-Ba-Lan-Kar Monastery and the locals believe whatever you wish with your true heart will find its way to reach you.
It is among the few oldest monasteries in the world founded by the great translator Rinchansang-po.

2. Chandrika Temple

A few steps from Hu-Ba-Lan-Kar Monastery is Chandika Temple. It is next to the Anganwadi.

3.Vishnu Narayan Nagini Temple

Vishnu Narayan Nagini Temple

It is constructed in a Tibetan style of architecture. The villagers have to come in the Kinnauri dress to go inside the temple.

4.Suicide Point

On the Roghi Kinnaur road, lies a vertical slope which is famously known as a Suicide point. People believe if you look down from that edge your mind will be shaken up and also Kinnaur roads are one of the deadliest roads in India. It clearly depicts the point.

Budget Required for Kalpa Trip 

I am going to suggest Budget Required for Kalpa Trip as from a normal human being perspective who wants to do Hassle-free and as a Solo Traveller. Passionate Solo Travellers can do even for less.

Firstly, Starting from Delhi, I will be taking Shimla – Reckong Peo – Kalpa

Delhi – Shimla Volvo Bus = Rs. 650-Rs.750
Shimla- Reckong Peo Bus = Rs. 420
Reckong Peo – Kalpa = Rs. 15

Secondly,
stay in Hotel –
It will be going to cost between Rs.1500 – Rs. 2000 minimum for a night.

Thirdly, food options are reasonable. It can easily be done at Rs.500-Rs.600 for a day

Overall, for 3-4 days of the Kalpa valley trip only starting from Delhi can be done at the budget of Rs.6500- Rs.7000 as far as my calculation goes.

By the way, have you heard of the last Indian Village?
The distance between Kalpa to Chitkul is 72km. After summarizing your Kalpa trip you can go straight to Chitkul valley.

I end up doing a Trip to Kinnaur Valley under 8K, you can do it too.

Q. Is Kalpa Trip enough for 2 days?
Ans. Yes, definitely. Kalpa Trip can be done in one day only but if you want to spend more time then it’s fair enough to stay one more day. Traveling very far and two days to spend are a must.

Q. Where can I go near Kalpa Kinnaur?
Ans. Roghi village is located 10-12km away from Kalpa and it is a beautiful place to be around.

Q. In which month can I find apple orchards?
Ans. if you want to see Apple orchards, It can be found in the month of August. It has a shelf life of four months.

      Hello Ravindra,

      Glad that it was useful. The Homestay where I had stayed will going to cost you Rs.1000 but I insist to stay in Kalpa homestays and will going to cost around Rs.700-Rs.800 approx. For Hotels as I mentioned Kalpa Deshang is quite expensive but worth your stay Rs. 3500 – Rs. 4000 for a night.
