Let me think for you, something like –

Tall mountains with sharp edges and heart-stopping views while driving on the deadliest roads in India.

                                       OR

The mighty Kinnaur Kailash range situated at an elevation of (6,050m).

Is this what you are thinking 🤔 ?

…… 😃Ah, we are on the same mountain (page) then.

How to Reach Kalpa from Delhi

Kalpa can be reached in different ways –

Kalpa By Flight

The nearest airport is Jubbarhatti located 22kms away from Shimla.

The distance remains 243km which can be covered either by taking the 1st option is: taking a bus from Lakkar Bazar, ISBT or old bus stand which will drop at Reckong Peo.

Regular buses are available from Reckong Peo to Kalpa valley which is about 3km-4km.

The 2nd option is: taking a cab which will directly drop you at Kalpa (costly).

  1. Delhi ➡️ Shimla (flight) (347km) ➡️ Reckong Peo (231km) (Bus) ➡️ Kalpa (3km)
  2. Delhi ➡️ Shimla (flight) (347km) ➡️ Kalpa (Cab)

Kalpa By Train

The nearest railway station is also in Shimla, Shimla railway station.

The distance remains 224km which can be covered either by taking the 1st option is: taking a bus from Lakkar Bazar, ISBT or old bus stand to Reckong Peo (same as after getting down by flight).

  1. Delhi ➡️ Shimla (train) (347km) ➡️ Reckong Peo (231km) ➡️ Kalpa (3km)
  2. Delhi ➡️ Shimla (train) (347km) ➡️ Kalpa (Cab)

Kalpa By Bus

Most convenient in my opinion is by bus.

Take a night bus from Delhi to Shimla and then take a day bus from Shimla to Kalpa, if the bus is available (if not take a bus till Reckong Peo and then to Kalpa).

Most affordable and convenient journey –

  1. Delhi ➡️ Shimla {night Bus (347km)} ➡️ Reckong Peo {day Bus (231km)} ➡️ Kalpa in the evening (3km)

Long stretch at one go and then in intervals –

  1. Delhi ➡️ Rampur {night Bus (474km)}➡️ Reckong Peo {day Bus( 99km)} ➡️ Kalpa in the evening ( 3km)

Direct Bus –

  1. Delhi ➡️ Reckong Peo (573km)➡️  Kalpa (3km)

You can also go from Delhi to Reckong Peo directly, one bus leaves at 8:10 p.m. from ISBT Kashmiri Gate and will reach the destination at around 3-3: 30 p.m.

Note – If you willing to travel by Bus, here are the rates (because I have traveled by bus)

*It can be subject to change

Delhi – Shimla (Volvo) = Around Rs.700-Rs.800

Shimla – Reckong Peo (Ordinary HRTC) = Rs.417

Reckong Peo – Kalpa (Ordinary) = Rs.15

Major Note – It’s going to be a long journey, so don’t try to travel empty stomach and especially in the bus.

Let me share an example during my Kalpa Valley Trip – I was traveling in public transport and the lady sitting ahead of me started vomiting and continued till the whole journey because she hasn’t eaten anything and that disturbed everyone.

Leanings – Don’t ever travel empty stomach especially in mountains where hip hop is a normal thing.

Recently the news came there’s a landslide in Kinnaur region and it’s before the monsoon. This strictly says to avoid these regions not only in monsoon but pre-monsoon too.

How to Reach Kalpa from Shimla

This is more precious as I have listed above to reach Kalpa valley from Delhi.

Although Shimla will always going to be in the list as a first stoppage. Hence from Shimla –

  1. Shimla ➡️ Reckong Peo {day Bus (231km)} ➡️ Kalpa in the evening (3km)

Please Note – You will going to reach Reckong Peo in the evening, so there’s an outside chance that you will get the bus to Kalpa from outside Peo bus stand. The last bus leaves almost around 6 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. If you miss out, there are taxis and also people are helpful even a lift will work.

How to Reach Kalpa from Rampur Bushahr

Kalpa from Rampur Bushahr is another 100 km (approx.) It’s also a major hub where connectivity to anywhere can be found easily.

Why Stay in Kalpa only?

Because of two reasons –

1. The convenience of the bus

The bus is available from Kalpa to reach Reckong Peo and is scheduled to leave after every 30-40 min. and the last bus to leave for Peo is 5:40 p.m. from Kalpa. (Rs.20)

Where I was staying, hardly any bus passes by. So, I have to come to Kalpa 2-3 km to catch a bus.

Reckong Peo

Reckong Peo - Headquarter of Kinnaur District

Headquarter of Kinnaur, Reckong Peo also known as Peo by localities. It comes before Kalpa. One can take a bus from Peo to Kalpa and it charges Rs.15. Panoramic view of Kinner Kailash is visible from Peo and a much much beautiful view from Kalpa 😄.

Reckong Peo bazar is just below the bus stand, from bazar upper road goes to Kalpa and the straight road goes to Pangi.

Localities believe that after the sunrise Pangi is not a place to be around because of the people’s behavior.
